Department of Justice Grant
The Office for Women’s Affairs, as the administrative body for the Commission on Personal Safety, has been awarded a two-year Grant to Reduce Crimes Against Women on Campus by the Department of Justice. This is not a new issue on college campuses, and at IU we of course, already have many services in place to address it, including: the Indiana University Police Department, the Sexual Assault Crisis Service, the Dean of Students Office of Student Advocates and Office of Student Ethics, the Commission on Personal Safety, and the Office for Women’s Affairs sexual assault prevention education programs (RAISE). Our staff, students, and faculty also have access to the community services of the Bloomington Police and Monroe County Sheriff, Bloomington Hospital, and Middleway House.
This $199,826 grant will provide us the opportunity to further strengthen the coordination among these organizations and to provide web-based education/training for these service providers as well as for students. We are very pleased that the grant includes provisions for a mandatory sexual assault prevention education program for all incoming students. This will be the single largest scale program on the issue on the IUB campus, with outreach to students at greatest risk for experiencing assault.
