Check out the Corpus of Northern Haitian Creole
The Creole Institute is proud to announce the release of the first publicly available corpus of spoken Haitian Creole. Recorded in 2007 with the support of NSF Grant #0542329, the corpus contains ten hour-long interviews with 20 Haitians from the Cape Haitian region, with audio and written texts available for each one. The interviews, which were conducted with adults and children from rural and urban areas, cover a wide range of topics of interest to scholars of anthropology, religion folklore, and anyone else interested in Haitian Studies, including discussions of vodou, family life, traditional stories, and the lives of children. Scholars of Haitian Creole will also find this corpus extremely useful, with its faithful rendering of the particularities of Northern Haitian Creole, which abound in the ten hours of material. The text and audio of the interviews, along with a document explaining the transcription conventions, are available for free download below. Warning: Audio files are large, totalling 509 MB.
Or if you'd like the files in a single download, click here.
