Chair's Message
Welcome!
Our department cultivates a long and vibrant tradition of teaching and research in Indiana University's highly regarded College of Arts and Sciences. Our award winning faculty offers a vigorous undergraduate and graduate educational program and conducts innovative research to understand the complexities of crime and justice. Although we are a relatively small department in terms of faculty size (15 at this writing), our students make us one of the largest units in the College. We enroll approximately 600 majors, 100 minors, and 50 Ph.D. students. We are huge. Yet, we never lose sight of the need for each individual to achieve high levels of excellence.
We are an intensely dedicated group excited by our department's potential. Through our research and curriculum, we seek to foster a critical understanding of crime, law and society; and most of us do so with a special emphasis on race, ethnicity, culture, gender and other markers of diversity such as class, sexual orientation, disability and age. We explore and stress the ethical dimensions and implications of justice systems, both formal and informal. We take seriously the reality that we live in a global society, as evidenced by the international dimensions of our work. We approach law and justice as a matter of mental health. We challenge ourselves to become engaged, critical, and analytical consumers of social issues.
Our curriculum fosters both depth and breadth within and across disciplines that study crime and justice, preparing our graduates to become future leaders who will cross academic, social, and geographical boundaries. Our popular undergraduate program provides a strong liberal arts foundation for careers in law, human/social services, research, education, and a variety of professions that serve society. Internships offer important opportunities to learn outside of classrooms and explore career options. Our interdisciplinary graduate program fosters a high degree of flexibility to meet the educational and career goals of those who seek to work in academic and research settings. Our graduate students do more than acquire a solid foundation of knowledge relating to crime and justice; they leave with well-crafted teaching and research skills needed to become first-rate scholars. Faculty consider students colleagues.
Consider us closely as you further your education and seek to understand some of the most pressing issues facing humanity. Explore our website to see our faculty and students' interests and accomplishments. Keep in mind, however, that we are much more than what you will see on your screen. We are a congenial group. We also have incredibly dedicated support staff and advisors who make critical contributions to our mission and who make all of our lives easier. Few other places match the excitement and opportunities that can await you at Indiana University's exceptionally beautiful and intellectually rich campus. Come see who we are, what we do, and why we are a part of a world class university.
