The P481 Internship Program
Internships not only help students relate classroom experience with professional work experience but also help to define career goals. Juniors and seniors who have completed P100, P200, P202, P290, K300 are eligible for the program. Interns receive 3-6 hours credit and work 10-20 hours per week at the internship agency.
The credit hours do NOT count toward the 27 credit hours required for
the major, and they cannot be applied toward the two, 400-level courses
required for the major. The credit hours for P481 can be applied to the
36, 300 - or 400-level credit hours required for a B.A. degree. Interns are required to meet regularly with the internship coordinator and to submit a 10-20 page paper based on their field experience.
Internship opportunities in Bloomington are with Middleway House, Shelter, Inc., Youth Shelter, the Indiana University Police Department, and with the Monroe County Sheriff, Probation, Public Defender, and Prosecutor offices, in Court Administration, security/loss prevention, and at the Juvenile Treatment Center. Students may also acquire internship experience away from campus. Please contact Professor Head for further information.
Internship Opportunities Program
The Career Development Center sometimes offers internship positions which are of interest to criminal justice majors. Internships are usually not paid, one semester in duration, and participating students receive 3-6 hours of academic credit. Students must have a GPA of 2.5, be of junior standing in the College of Arts and Sciences, and have completed the core courses in order to apply.
A second Internship Opportunities Program option, Cooperative Education, involves paid co-op positions where students work for an employer on a full-time six month basis for at least two work periods. Sophomore standing is required before application. Some students may qualify for P481 internship credit during the final co-op session.
