Welcome to the
Center for the Study of History and Memory

We are a grant-funded research center that is dedicated to building upon our work in the field of oral history while broadening the range of our research projects to address the many ways that people remember, represent, and use the past in public and private life. We also offer training to students, faculty, and the public in the methodology of oral history through workshops and through our online guide to "Oral History Interviewing Techniques." This site also describes the Center's staff and advisory committee, offers a finding aid to the growing archive of oral history projects conducted to date by the Center, our most recent newsletter, and a multitude of resources that provide additional information about many facets of history and memory.

The Center for the Study of History and Memory is co-coordinating the Indiana University Bicentennial Oral History Project with the University Archives and the Office of the President. We are collecting oral histories from IU alumni. We are interested in alumni stories from all eight campuses. Visit the project's website to learn more about it, and share your own story to become a part of IU's history by contacting our center to set up an interview.

Visit the website for our 2010 NEH summer institute for school teachers, "Social Movements in Modern America: Labor, Civil Rights, and Feminism." Co-sponsored by the CSHM and the IU Center on Congress, the National Endowment for the Humanities designated this institute as part of its "We the People" initiative, designed to encourage and enhance the teaching, study, and understanding of American history, culture, and democratic principles.
