Understanding of the Middle East cannot occur without a solid grounding in the modern languages of the region. Thus, Center for the Study of the Middle East (CSME) of Indiana University Bloomington maintains a Language Resource Center (LRC) and is dedicated to the study of Modern Standard Arabic, Modern Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, and Kurdish. This wesbite is a reference of resources for developing foreign language proficiency. We maintain up-to-date lists of language textbooks, websites, and our own learning modules.
Indiana University's Islamic Studies Program produced an excellent electronic resource for learners of Arabic, the Arabic Language Learning and Translation Annex (ALLTA). ALLTA is currently developing a range of web-based Tutorials that are designed to be a resource for a wide range of users. By Fall Semester of 2012, the site included web tutorials for introducing the Arabic Script and its pronunciation.
