Each year, the Center for Survey Research conducts 25-40 research projects.
General Social Survey - Science and Engineering Module Evaluation (GSS-S&E). The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant to John Kennedy to conduct research on how survey respondents understand and answer selected questions in the GSS-S&E. The evaluation will include cognitive interviews in a lab, a survey using cognitive interviewing procedures, and extensive data analysis of the GSS-S&E questions.
National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Since 1999, the CSR has conducted the NSSE for the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. The NSSE is an Internet and postal survey of a random sample of undergraduates at colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. More than 600 schools have registered for NSSE10. NSSE10 will begin in late January 2010. The results from NSSE 2009 are now available.
Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). The FSSE surveys faculty at selected institutions that also participate in NSSE and asks about issues included in the NSSE. FSSE is conducted on the web only. More than 160 institutions participated in FSSE09. More than 150 schools have registered for FSSE10. FSSE10 will begin in March 2010.
Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE). The LSSSE is similar to NSSE but many survey items are adapted for law school students. Approximately 80 law schools participated in LSSSE09. Registration for LSSSE10 has begun. LSSSE10 will begin in April 2010.
Other NSSE-related projects. A Spanish language version of the questionnaire is used for college students in Puerto Rico. The NSSE web questionnaire was adapted for students in colleges in Canada, including a French language version that is used in selected Canadian universities. The Beginning College Survey of Student Expectations (BCSSE) is conducted during the spring and summer. The BCSSE allows comparisons of pre-college expectations with their first-year experiences. Almost 45,000 students participated in BCSSE09.
Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP). The CSR is conducting a multi-year project that surveys alumni of arts institutions (high schools, conservatories, colleges and universities) for the IU Center for Postsecondary Research. The first pilot survey finished in early February. A second pilot starts on November 16, 2009.
Majors Matter. The CSR is conducting a web survey of undergraduates at 8 colleges and universities to measure the impact of double majors. The project begins in November and finishes in early December.
PACT Project. The CSR is working with the IU School of Nursing on a project to research the effects of various interventions to improve colorectal screenings. The project began in January 2008 and will continue for three years.
Planned Giving Index Survey. Starting in July 2001, the CSR began conducting the Planned Giving Index Survey for the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. This mail and web survey contacts a panel of planned giving consultants twice each year to determine their attitudes on the climate for philanthropic activities. PGI23 was conducted during May and June 2009. PGI24 is currently being conducted and will finish in late November.
