Each year, the Center for Survey Research conducts 25-40 research projects. In this page, we provide an abridged list of current and upcoming projects.

Current Projects

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Since 1999, the CSR has conducted the NSSE for the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. The NSSE is an Internet and postal survey of a random sample of undergraduates at colleges and universities across the country. More than 770 institutions participated in NSSE08 and approximately 1.5 million students were invited to respond to NSSE. NSSE08 started in January and finished in May. The final datasets are in preparation.

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). The FSSE surveys faculty at selected institutions that participate in NSSE. The survey asks faculty about issues included in the NSSE. FSSE is conducted on the web only. Approximately 165 institutions are participating in FSSE08 which started on March and ended in June. Final datasets are being prepared.

Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE). The LSSSE is similar to NSSE but many survey items are adapted for law school students. Approximately 80 law schools participated in LSSSE08 which started in March and ended in early May.

Other NSSE-related projects. A Spanish language version of the questionnaire is used for college students in Puerto Rico. The NSSE web questionnaire was adapted for students in colleges in Canada, including a French language version that is used in selected Canadian universities. The Beginning College Survey of Student Expectations (BCSSE) is conducted during the spring and summer. The BCSSE allows comparisons of pre-college expectations with their first-year experiences. BCSSE08 has started and will continue through late summer.

Mental Health Services Consumer Satisfaction Survey. Since 1995, the CSR has been conducting an annual telephone survey for the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction. The survey examines the satisfaction of those who received mental health services from state-supported mental health facilities. The 2008 survey started in January and will finish in June.

PACT Project. The CSR is working with the IU School of Nursing on a project to research the effects of various interventions to improve colorectal screenings. The project began in January 2008 and will continue for three years.

Giving Circles Survey. The CSR is conducting a mail survey of members of giving circles in cooperation with the IU Center on Philanthropy. The survey began in November 2007 and  will end in June 2008.

High Wealth Households Survey. The CSR will conduct a mail and web survey of 20,000 households living in high wealth areas for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The survey focuses on charitable giving. The survey will begin in June. A similar survey was conducted in summer 2006.

New York City Employers Survey. The CSR is conducting a survey of employers in New York City to determine the factors that affect employment. The survey began in May 2007 and temporarily stopped in August 2007. The survey restarted in March 2008 and will end in June.

Planned Giving Index Survey. Starting in July 2001, the CSR began conducting the Planned Giving Index Survey for the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. This mail and web survey contacts a panel of planned giving consultants twice each year to determine their attitudes on the climate for philanthropic activities. PGI20 was conducted during October and November 2007. PGI21 ran through May and June 2008.
