Web Surveys

The CSR has extensive Web survey experience. During fall 1998, we reviewed all the major Web survey software packages and found that none met our needs. To conduct Web surveys, we developed an in-house capacity using ColdFusion as the front end to an SQL server maintained by Indiana University. Since early 1999, we have developed considerable skill in Web survey development, programming, and utilization.

Our first Web survey was part of  the National Survey of Student Engagement in 1999. We also worked with the Crane Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center to develop a Web survey of Crane employees that was administered in May 1999. Since then, we have conducted both large- and small-scale Web surveys including the National Survey of Student Engagement. Currently, we develop a Web questionnaire as a companion to most mail survey projects.

Over the next few years, we expect our Web surveys will increase as a portion of our research effort. We purchased one Web server in summer 2000 and now find that we will need three webservers to meet our future demands for Web survey functionality. We are purchasing two new webservers in summer 2001.
