Courses :: CULS C701 Topic: Perspectives in American Standards
What do we talk about when we talk about “American Studies”? This course will focus on metacriticism and disciplinary introspection by exploring the way American Studies scholars talk to each other (and themselves) about what their discipline is as well as what it does. Starting from a discussion of what constitutes a “community,” and proceeding to question how we understand “America” to be defined, this course will trace the development of American Studies as an academic discipline from both a historical and a theoretical perspective. Then, we will read a few key texts that embody, rather than problematize, American Studies’ inherent interdisciplinarity.
