Student Tutorials (WTS)

Writing Tutorial Services, or WTS (pronounced “wits”), is a state-of-the-art writing center located in Ballantine Hall 206. There, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, IUB students can find assistance in composing and revising essays written for courses in any discipline. WTS is not a proofreading or editing service, but rather a component in the University's teaching mission. Walk-ins may be assisted immediately, but in general it is wise to make an appointment by calling 855-6738. WTS also offers walk-in tutorial hours in the Herman B Wells Library, third floor of the West Tower, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. In addition, WTS participates in cooperative tutoring efforts in the Academic Support Centers at Briscoe, Forest, and Teter Residence Halls, where WTS-trained tutors are available for walk-in tutorials from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. (During the summer, tutoring is provided only at the main location, Ballantine 206, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in Summer Session I and 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. in Summer Session II.)

Faculty members can request “course-specific” tutoring for any of their undergraduate courses. A graduate student with enviable writing and teaching skills and whenever possible with a background in the discipline in question will be assigned to the course. He or she will take pains to acquire the syllabus and assignments in an effort to be of as much use as possible, and, if requested, will meet with the faculty member to discuss the aims of writing in the course. Every effort will then be made to schedule students from the class with the assigned tutor. Since that will not always be possible, however, WTS tutors are organized into working groups dealing with courses from similar or allied disciplines; these working groups meet regularly so that tutors can share their knowledge about the courses with which they’re dealing. Students coming to WTS, therefore, can expect to meet with someone familiar with their class.

Faculty members can also request informational materials (e.g., bookmarks with hours of operation, location, and phone number) or a short (5-minute) course visit describing WTS and its services for students. Call 855-6738.

Even if you don’t request course-specific tutoring or a class visit, you may want to recommend that your students visit WTS as they draft or revise their papers. Please feel free to copy and paste the following paragraphs into your syllabus, or otherwise distribute them to your class.
