May 2012 - The new Crystallization Automation Facility (CAF) will be installed no later that mid-May on the 4th floor of Simon Hall. Nearly $800,000 is being invested in this facility to enhance and accelerate structural biology efforts at IUB. The purchased equipment includes a Phoenix DT drop-setting robot, a Desktop Alchemist solution/screen mixer, a Minstrel HT UV imaging system and two Gallery 700 crystal incubators. The equipment, purchased from Rigaku, is fully integrated and effectively provides the resources of a structural genomics center at IUB.
March 9-10, 2012 - The Chemistry department and Biochemistry program are holding a joint graduate recruiting weekend to introduce students to the wonderful research opportunities at Indiana University in both Chemistry and Biochemistry. This event, combined with individual visits by prospective students, will result in a fantastic incoming class of students beginning next fall!!

December 14, 2011 - The lab welcomes Siobhan Deis! Siobhan is a student in the Bichemistry gradute program at the beginning of the Fall 2011 semester and joins the lab after completion of three rotations in biochemistry program labs. See her profile on the Members page for more info.
November 14, 2011 - Ardian Soca Wibowo became the first member of the Dann laboratory to complete a Ph.D. thesis. Congratulations Soca!!
November 10, 2011 - Iris Dong is now officially a Ph.D. candidate! Congratulations to Iris for successfuly presenting and defending her proposed thesis research!!
November 3, 2011 - A grant proposal submitted by Professor Dann to set up a Crystallization Automation Facility (CAF) at IUB has been awarded by METACyt. This facility is tentatively scheduled for installation and operation in April 2012. More details will follow.
November 2-4, 2011 - CD3 presented the lab's research at the the Pittsburgh Diffraction Society conference held at Case Western Reserve University Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
October 28-30, 2011 - CD3 presented the lab's research at the Protein Data Bank 40th anniversary symposium at Cold Spring Harbor Labs in New York. The event featured pioneers in X-crystallography and NMR spectroscopy.
October 15, 2011 - The 2nd Annual Watanabe Symposium in Biotechnology is held at Indiana University. This year, the lab served as host for Professor Douglas Rees from Cal Tech for this symposium. This event is held annually at IUB to honor the memory of August Watanabe, a pioneer physician scientist responsible for the development of many pharmaceutical agents that Eli Lilly has developed over the past two decades.
September 17, 2011 - The lab held a send-off party for Deblina at the Dann clan house. The event featured Indian food from Shanti followed by karaoke "singing" by many in the lab as per Deblina's request. We capped a fun evening with Kinect games that included random jumping/dodging and dancing. As always, a site to behold! Pictures will be posted soon on the lab photos page.
September 12, 2011 - Caleb Cooper, a junior biochemistry major, has joined the lab! Caleb will be working with CD3 on the development of riboswitch sensors.
September 8, 2011 - Deblina De Ghosh has completed all requirements for her M.S. degree today when she turned in her thesis document to the graduate school. Congratulations Deblina!

June 27, 2011 - A somewhat random note - Alex, Soca and CD3 went to Indianapolis to pick up a free liquid nitrogen cooling system (X-STREAM) for crystal cryo-cooling during X-ray data collection. This system, which matches our current cooling systems, will serve as a spare cooling system. It was quite the feat to fit all the components in the back of a Nissan Murano since the department van was unavailable. Thanks Soca and Alex. :)
May 16, 2011 - Paige Matthews, a sophomore biochemistry major, begins research in the lab. A warm welcome to Paige, who will be working throughout the summer and beyond alongside Xiaohui!
March 25-26, 2011 - The Department of Chemistry held its graduate recruiting weekend with more than 60 students in attendance! Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make this event a success!!
March 4-5, 2011 - The Biochemistry graduate program held its recruiting weekend. Among the student that the lab hosted, Elizabeth Arcus, Siobhan Deis, and Wan-Hung Lee will be attending IUB in the Fall! Welcome!!
February 2-4, 2011 - CD3 was in Carlsbad, California, to look at available automation equipment from Rigaku. The goal of this visit is to make final recommendations for equipment to include in a METACyt grant proposal to set up a high throughput automation facility for macromolecular crystallography at IUB.
January 12, 2011 - A new low volume isothermal titration calorimeter was installed in the lab today! This instrument, the nanoITC from TA Instruments, will allow binding experiments to be carried out with 0.3 mL samples volumes. Standard ITC instruments use approximately 2 mL per experiment.
December 9, 2010 - Xiaohui Gao is now officially a Ph.D. candidate! Congratulations to Xiaohui for passing her qualifying exam!!
October 12-15, 2010 - The Third International Folate Symposium on Folate Receptors and Transporters was held at Zion National Park near Springdale, Utah. CD3 and Soca attended and took some fantastic pictures - and learned about advances in folate mediated therapies!

July 23, 2010 - CD3 attended and presented a research talk at the retirement celebratrion of Johann (Hans) Deisenhofer, his postdoctoral advisor. Hans had a fantastic scientific career highlighted by many important discoveries in structural biology. It was an honor to present alongside many of his former lab members in this all day symposium entitled Challenges in Structural Biology.
July 6, 2010 - Hannah Kenninger, an incoming freshman undergraduate and IFLE program student begins research in the lab. Welcome Hannah!
June 26, 2010 - Lab party 'Fun in the Sun' at Chelsea's house in Fishers, Indiana. We played some tennis in the morning, cooled off frequently in the pool, ate some awesome food from the grill followed by decadent desserts (tres leches anyone?), and finished off with some indoor games. June 22, 2010 - The lab was able to set up crystallization trials using a Phoenix robot from Art Robbins Instruments. The demo of this robot was a success as we were able to screen about 12,000 crystallization conditions during the course of the day. The lab is looking at every possible resource to obtain funds to set up an automation facility for crystallography at Indiana University Bloomington.

June 8, 2010 - The lab is awarded its first grant from the National Institutes of Health. This grant officially starts on July 1, 2010, and continues until summer 2015. Great work everyone!

April 15, 2010 - Iris officially joins the lab! Iris received her undergraduate degree from Peking University in Beijing, China. Everyone welcomes you to the lab - even if Soca thinks you are too tall to join the Dann lab!
April 2010 - Chelsea is accepted into medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine. Well done!
March 9, 2010 - Taking advantage of the ongoing agreement with Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) and beamline 4.2.2 at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs in Berkeley, California, Soca screens crystals remotely from a computer in the lab for the first time. IUB is part of the Moleular Biology Consortium at ALS 4.2.2, which allows routine access for local or remote data collection.
