This Guide has been prepared to serve faculty members and academic administrators by collating information relevant to many aspects of academic life at Indiana University, Bloomington. It is a collection of officially approved documents and explanations of the way the policy documents are interpreted and implemented by administrators on this campus. The official documents are separated at the end of each section, labeled with the name of the body which approved them. The following scheme is used:

  1. If approved by the one Faculty Council in existence before 1969-70, approval body is indicated as Faculty Council.
  2. If approved by the all-University Faculty Council established in 1969 (and therefore a policy applicable to the entire system) approval body is identified as UFC.
  3. If approved by the campus council (and therefore an action applicable to one campus only), approval body is identified as BFC.
  4. If approved by the Board of Trustees, approval body is identified as Trustees.

Administrative interpretation of these policies, as well as administrative policies where no offical body has taken action on an issue, are at the front of each section of the Guide.

Statements and policies in this Guide do not create legal rights. In the event of differences between this document and the original documents cited herein, the wording of the original documents or master contracts shall obtain.
