Course Format: Lecture: 1:00P-2:15P, TR, JH 124. One fifty-minute
discussion group per week.

Prerequisites:  High school biology - for biological and other science
majors. Familiarity with the World Wide Web also is helpful.

Course Description: This course focuses on biological processes above the
cellular level including evolutionary mechanisms, ecology, and the
diversity of life.  We discuss who Charles Darwin was, how he developed the
theory of evolution, and how genetic variation is the key to the origin of
species.  Next, we explore the evolutionary history of plant and animal
diversity.  Finally, we study how organisms interact with each other and
with their environment.

Required Text: Campbell, et al. 1999.  "Biology", fifth edition.

Weekly Assignments: Text readings and discussion group assignments.
Registration and attendance of discussion groups are mandatory.  Discussion
groups allow you to gain a better understanding of the material in a small
classroom setting.  In addition, some "extra" topics will be covered in
discussion sections and you will be tested on that information.

Exams/Papers: There are three exams and a comprehensive final.  Exams 1-3
will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions.  The final exam will consist
of 100 multiple-choice questions.
