Course Format: Three hours of laboratory and one hour of discussion per week.
Prerequisites: P: or concurrent Biol L112; R: L111.
Course Description: L113 is a general, introductory biology laboratory
course intended for science majors.
The course has three goals: (1) to introduce students to the essentials of
experimentation with a focus on investigative logic and methods; (2) to
familiarize students with some of the principles of biology with emphasis
on cell biology, genetics, and evolutionary biology; (3) to integrate
different disciplines within biology so that students see the
interrelationships.
The hour discussion, which precedes the three hour laboratory, relates the
experiments done in the lab to other aspects of biology.
Required Text: "Biology" by Campbell, Fifth edition; "L113 Discussion
Topics Manual/Laboratory Manual/Computer Manual" by J. Bonner.
Weekly Assignments: Readings in Discussion Topics Manual, Lab Manual, and
textbook; weekly (pop) quizzes, flow charts, "think pieces" possible in the
discussion period and/or lab.
Exams/Papers: Four-six lab reports (mini reports); paper associated with
independent project.
