C502: INTRODUCTION TO BIBLIOGRAPHY IN CLASSICAL STUDIES: RESEARCH
TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES LTD.
Meets from 4:00-5:15 p.m. Tuesday in WH 118
This 1 credit, 8 week course is the department's Proseminar providing
an introduction to some of the bibliographical and lexical tools
available for research in Classical Studies, and also to such ancient
resources as coins, inscriptions, scholia and textual fragments.
Through direct hands on experience you will come to see how copyists
made errors and how an apparatus criticus is formed. The Director of
Graduate Studies serves as coordinator; each class session will be
conducted by a different member of the department who will assign a
short practice exercise to be submitted for a grade. The course is
required for all students expecting to become PhD candidates, and very
strongly recommended for all entering and second year students.
