L307 Meets from 12:20P-1:10P MWF in BH 345
This semester the course will comprise a thorough reading of Cicero's
Pro Caelia, one of his oratorical masterpieces. In addition, we will
explore the political and social milieu that gave rise to the speech,
late Republican Rome, and the career of M. Tullius Cicero. We will
also give consideration to rhetorical constructions and devices, a
main concern of Cicero. Time allowing, we will read some of the poems
of Catullus that apparently refer to Clodia, the victim of the Pro
Caelio, and some of Cicero's letters to and from Caelius.
There will be four examinations, three during class periods, the last
during the scheduled final examination period. In addition, there
will be weekly homework assignments and class quizzes, which will be
collected and calculated with a class performance evaluation for a
final grade. These five grades will be averaged to determine the
final course grade.
