3CR Meets MWF 11:15-12:05 BH 317

This course meets with L540.  Graduate students in Classics should
enroll for L540; undergraduates in Classics should enroll for L410;
graduate students from other departments may enroll for either L410 or
L540.

This course attempts to improve the students' ability to read
Latin and to familiarize the students with some of the differences in
syntax and vocabulary between Medieval Latin and Classical Latin. The
authors read will include the nuns Silvia Aquitana and Hrothsvitha,
the ecclesiastical writers Bede and Bernhard of Cluny, the historians
Gregory of Tours, Einhard, Liutprand, and Geoffrey of Monmouth, the
secular poetry of the Goliards, the religious poetry of Venantius
Fortunatus and Bernard of Clairvaux, as well as the drama of the
Mystery Plays.  These and other authors shall be read according to the
subjects that the students in the course express an interest in.

The emphasis shall be on improving the students' vocabulary and
ability to recognize constructions.  There shall be four tests but no
papers.
