This course serves as an introduction to race and ethnicity in contemporary
American culture. The course examines how the social construction of race
impacts media content and audiences. It explores mechanisms of racism and
considers efforts to overcome media racism in the United States.  The
course will incorporate screening, interpretation, and analysis of
mainstream media content both from commercial television and Hollywood
films. Class meetings will combine lecture and  discussion. Grades will be
based on midterm and final exams and one or two short essays that will be
assigned over the course of the semester
