College Of Arts And Sciences | Media Influence and Bias
E104 | 0150 | Sellers, P

This course explores the influence and bias of the mass media in
American politics. We examine how election campaign ads influence
votersí perceptions and evaluations, how the news media may affect
public knowledge and attitudes, and how politicians manipulate their
news coverage.

Students will read campaign ads, politiciansí speeches, and press
accounts of electoral and legislative campaigns. Course requirements
include group research projects investigating the varying
effectiveness of campaign ads and news stories; computer analysis of
survey data; oral and written summaries of the research projects; and
three exams with essay and identification questions.
