Survey of problems in language and cognition with an emphasis on the
problems of time and timing in speech:(1) basic theoretical
orientation (eg, to what degree language is symbolic) and several
specific topics in language processing including (2) general auditory
pattern recognition and (3) nature of the `voicing' or `tensity' contrast,
its development and maleability during acquisition of a second language and
the tendency toward rhythmic production of speech.
Students will take a midterm exam and do a project, which might be a
detailed proposal for an experiment, a modelling project, or a review paper.
