COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION. OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY. DECLARED MINORS OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM BH402.
This class will introduce students to a range of genres, modes, and critical vocabularies. We will spend some time on dramatic and poetic analysis, discussing such topics as the nature of tragedy and comedy, the function of irony, the range of poetic genres and technical means, and in large strokes, certain aspects of literary history. The final half or third of the class will look at prose fiction, and we will probably focus on the work of one author—perhaps even one text—so that we can also gain some historical sense of critical methodologies and their transformations.
Because this course satisfies the intensive writing requirement, students will be expected to do a considerable amount of writing, as well as drafting and editing of others' work. The configuration of papers is not yet decided, but students should expect to write upwards of 30 pages over the course of the term, and to do some writing each week. We will probably also have a series of brief tests, designed to aid students in the retention of certain critical terms and their use.
