COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION. OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY. DECLARED MINORS OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM BH402.

This course is designed to introduce you to several types of literature and ways of coming to understanding that literature. In addition, you will have ample practice in writing about literature, and rewriting, for only through extensive revision can you come to have conscious control over your writing. The theme of the course is one of self-discovery and self-definition, a theme that will be traced through a variety of works of poetry, fictional prose, drama, and nonfictional prose. You will be asked to write several papers of varying length, in class and out, totalling some thirty pages. As you submit each paper, I will comment on it, returning it for your revision. At the end of the semester, you will resubmit some 15-20 pages of revised writing for reconsideration as part of the course grade. The formal requirements of the course will naturally center on the compositions, but there will also be a midterm and a final examination. Above all, you should be expected to come to class prepared to discuss the works you have read, even if you feel initially unsure of the ground of your criticism, for the course is designed to help you understand how you can come to understand literature and enjoy it.
