This course will treat two sets of issues in literary criticism and theory:
I. Mimesis (Imitation), Representation and Vraisemblance, II. Rhetoric
and poetic language. Each reading will be considered as an intervention in a
continuing controversy about the relations between literature, language and
truth, from the ancients to recent theories of structuralism and deconstruction.
There will be a mid-term and a final examination.
