Gender and Sexuality in Hispanic Theatre
Looking at drama within a historical frame, we will pay special attention to
discourses on gender and sexuality in Latin American and Spanish theatre and
consider the way this genre's performative aspect plays into the questioning
and diffusion of particular codes. Reading the works in their literary and
socio-political context, we will consider how theatre has been perceived in
different situations, the kinds of discourses that perception has created
and allowed, and the distance between theatre as experienced through the
text versus performance. The texts will likely include works by
María de Zayas, Tirso de Molina, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz,
Moratín, Zorrilla, García Lorca, Rosario Castellanos and
José Luis Alonso de Santos.
Course evaluation will be based on a combination of class participation,
short response papers, oral presentation, a midterm exam and a final paper.
All class discussions and readings will be in Spanish.
