This course is designed to give students a comprehensive view of the
African-American experience from the colonial period through
Reconstruction.  Particular emphasis will be placed on the material,
geographical, cultural, and ideological context of African-American
struggles in the United States.  This course will be both
chronological and topical in its progression and will touch on a
number of issues which are pertinent to understanding the formation of
racial identities in United States history.  Accordingly, topics to be
discussed include West African civilizations, the transatlantic slave
trade, black life in colonial America, African-American religions and
culture during slavery, slave resistance and abolitionism, and the
black experience during the American Civil War and Reconstruction.

Textbook/readings:  The textbooks for this course are listed below.
Both books can be purchased at the student bookstore.  Also, students
will be responsible for purchasing a coursepack of readings, which
will be available by the first day of class.
