This course discusses the history of one of most neglected nations in
European history, once the breadbasket of the Soviet Union and now one
of the largest nations in Europe.  Covers the entire history of
Ukraine, but emphasis is placed on the modern period.  Examines issues
of national identity and national consciousness and explores the place
of Ukraine in Russian and European history.  Some knowledge of
Russian/(East) East European history is helpful, but not required.
The main textbook is Subtelny, Ukraine, A History.  Combines lecture
and discussion.
