Above section meets with HIST E336

How are East African communities organized and how have they changed
over the course of the last 2000 years?  What impact did European
colonialism have on these societies?  How have East African societies
responded to crises such as the AIDS epidemic and ethnic genocide in
Rwanda?  We explore these questions and others as we read texts, watch
documentary films and discuss the features of the East African past.
No prerequisites.  Students take three exams with the possibility of
writing a paper in place of one of the exams
