This introductory course presumes no previous knowledge of history on
a world scale.  We shall examine some of the momentous changes that
took place in the first half of the century and which affected people
world-wide.  Topics:  the expansion and contraction of the great
powers; war and peace; nationalism; imperialism; industrialization;
socialism; feminism; and fascism.  Selected readings from descriptive
and analytical studies, biographies, and novels.  Three exams and
short assignments.
