Above section open to all students

This is a survey course in American History. It aims to tackle many
of the predominant themes, events, and personalities important in the
development of the United States from the end of Reconstruction to the
Present. In this specific section, emphasis will be placed on
developing and utilizing larger theoretical constructs as a means of
presenting, discussing, and interpreting specific experiences within
this very expansive period of time. Emphasis will be placed on ideas
and groups rather than dates and individuals. My specific goal as an
instructor is to have you leave this class with a set of intellectual
tools that will allow you to situate the subjects covered within their
proper place in American, Western, and World history. Additionally,
my hope is that the larger paradigms employed here will be beneficial
in your future academic coursework. In this respect I see this course
not only as a "history" class, but one that deals with issues and
themes that influence the fields of sociology, economics, political
science, and literature.
