Readings, discussion, and critical book reviews. Most weeks,
textbooks interpretations are compared with recent monographic
literature and specialized articles. Coverage includes Russia's
geopolitical dilemma in the nineteenth century; empire; state and
society; the Great Reforms; 1812 and memory; the revolutionary
movement; 1905 (the failed revolution); peasantry, nobility, the
middle class; education; the last decade, and World War I. Each
student will be required to write 4 to 5 critical book reviews, and
occasional synopses of the readings. Russian history graduate
students will be required to do regular readings in Russian; graduate
students in other fields are welcome. Textbooks used include G.
Hosking, Russia: People and Empire; D. Saunders, Russian in the Age of
Reform and Reaction; H. Rogger, Russia in the Age of Modernization and
Revolution; D. Moon, The Russian Peasantry.
