This course examines the various ways in which enslaved people of
African descent resisted slavery and other forms of oppression in the
Americas. The course takes a comparative approach to the topic of
resistance and is concerned with a variety of slave responses to
bondage, ranging from work stoppages and running away to violent
insurrection and revolution. Slave resistance will be placed within
the geographical, temporal, cultural, and ideological context within
which it takes place to illustrate how this phenomenon evolves over
time and space. Regions studied will include North America, Brazil,
Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba.
