This course examines cultural freedom and political dictatorship. It
focuses on Mikhail Bulgakov (the author of "Master and Margarita," one
of the greatest novels of the twentieth-century) and Anna Akhmatova
(the author of "Requiem," one of the most moving poems on life under
Stalin's Russia), but students can choose their favorite
authors/topics for their research essays as long as the issue of
cultural freedom and political power is addressed. Anyone interested
in the politics of culture is welcome
