Above section meets with HIST B322

This course will survey the changes and crises in Jewish history since
the Enlightenment. We will examine the impact of modern intellectual,
political, economic, and social forces on the Jewish people. It is
our aim to come to an understanding of how the Jews interpreted these
forces and how and in what ways they adapted and utilized them to suit
the Jewish experience and fashion a modern Jewish identity. Some of
the topics to be covered: Emancipation, Haskalah, new religious
movements in modern Judaism, the rise of Jewish nationalism, Jewish
socialism, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and the emergence of the
State of Israel.
