COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to present an introduction to management theory as
it relates to sport delivery systems. First, ethical principles will be
discussed as applied to a number of sport management issues. Second,
fundamental principles in managerial communication will be reviewed and
applied. Third, a macro understanding of organizational structure and its
effects on
administrative efficiency will be developed. Fourth, aspects of managerial
function and human behavior in organizations, such as planning, organizing,
leading, motivating, decision-making, and evaluating will be addressed.
Finally, the foregoing theoretical material will be applied to the specific
managerial components of sport delivery organizations.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate comprehension of the principles of management theory as they
relate to sport delivery organizations.
2. Apply ethical principles to the solution of problems confronting the
sport
administrator.
3. Apply fundamental communication principles to the preparation of
managerial
memos and reports.
4. Understand the influence which organizational structure has on the
ability of a
sport administrator to function effectively.
5. Develop an awareness of the multi-disciplinary nature of the study of
administration and the variety of resources which may be utilized to
research
administrative problems in sport delivery organizations.
6. Recognize that sport administrators need to know about technology,
organizational structure, administrative policy and procedure, and human
behavior in order to be effective decision makers.
7. Understand the basic managerial functions of sport delivery
organizations.
8. Develop the ability to analyze and problem solve via the case study
approach to
management and apply these skills to specific problems found in the
management of sport delivery organizations.
GRADES:
Foremost in the determination of the final grade is the quality of the
student's work and participation regarding the assignments and class
discussion. Grades will be based on the following percentages:
