PREREQUISITES:
Junior or Senior standing

CLASS MEETING:
One 75 minute period two times per week

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will present an overview of the rapidly developing field of
sport
psychology. Although the major thrust of American sport psychology involves
applications intended to enhance performance, this course will cover
subjects in
the area of exercise and mental health as well.  A wide range of topics in
sport
psychology will be reviewed. Selected topics will be discussed in greater
detail
because of their significance and/or empirical basis.  It should be
emphasized that
students will not be taught how to use various sport psychology techniques
in this
class.  Despite the popularity of many sport psychology techniques with both
athletes and coaches, there is a widespread lack of experimental evidence to
support their use.  Because of this, there will be a strong emphasis on
important
issues in sport psychology research so students may become more informed and
discriminating in judging the value and usefulness of information and
applications in
sport psychology.

GRADING:
The final grade will be based on a composite of three section exams and a
final
exam.  The three section exams will count a total of two-thirds of  the
total class
grade with the final counting for the remaining third.

SECTION EXAMS:
Each of the first three exams will consist of 40-50 multiple choice
questions of
material covered in the previous four weeks.  A review session will be
scheduled
for the class preceding each exam.  Study guides for each exam are available
in
the reading packet.  The test exam and computer grading sheet must both be
turned in to receive credit for the exam.

FINAL EXAM:
The final exam will not be comprehensive.  The format for the exam will be
in the
same format as the section exams.  There will be 40-50 questions over
material
from the last four weeks of the class.  In addition, there will be 15-20
questions
over material covered earlier in the class.  These questions will be of a
general
nature and questions used in earlier exams will not be repeated.
