L210: Topics in Language and Society (3cr)
Instructor: Dr. Robert Botne
Section: 3065
MWF 9:05-9:55A -- BH 316

In this course, we will examine popular attitudes towards language varieties and the
control we have over the kind of language we use. We will also consider how society
attempts to regulate and/or control our use and how do it does so? A variety of
contexts--the classroom, the courtroom, the business world, the media-- will be
examined in terms of linguistic stereotypes, discriminatory language restrictions, and
³political correctness².
