L543: Syntactic Analysis (3 cr)
Instructor: Dr. Y. Kitagawa
Section: 3084
TR 8:00-9:15A -- BH 137

The course is a graduate level introduction to syntactic theory and analysis. The
theoretical framework is the "principles and parameters" approach and the discussion
will be primarily but not necessarily based upon English data. Emphasis is placed on
constructing and evaluating grammatical analyses and on promoting a critical
understanding of the underlying assumptions of the generative framework as it has
developed in recent work in syntactic theory. Major areas of inquiry are: phrase
structure, empty categories, case theory, movement, functional categories, and
anaphora.
Course requirements: Regular homeworks and examinations. Active participation in
class discussion and close reading of all assignments is expected.
