Instructor: Dr. Natsuko Tsujimura
Section: 3094
TR 11:15-12:30P -- LI 851
This course surveys various topics in lexical semantics and in the representation of
argument structure from theoretical/comparative perspectives. We will focus on verbs
and examine works by Bresnan, Dowty, Fillmore, Grimshaw, Hale, Keyser, Jackendoff,
Levin, Van Valin, among others. Issues to be dealt with include, but are not limited to,
lexical representation of verbs, semantic roles, aspectual classes, event types,
unaccusativity, and semantics-syntax as well as morphology-syntax interations. Course
requirements include weekly reading assignments, class presentations, a term paper,
and active participation in class discussions. Students who are interested in this topic
whether they be from the linguistics department or other departments are welcome.
