L290 | 5481 | Ashby

One credit; This is also offered as LSTU L390/Section 5487;
5:45-8:25 PM Wednesday; Class will meet Oct. 18-Nov. 15 at
the White River Central Labor Council, 840 W. 17th St.,
Suite 9 and is limited to 24 enrollments. Bloomington has
recently been battered by plant closings or mass layoffs at
General Electric, Otis Elevator, Thompson and other
companies. Last November more than 50,000 demonstrators -
unionists, environmentalists, students, citizensí action
groups - shut down Seattle in protest of the World Trade
Organization. What is the connection between these two
events? What do the WTO, NAFTA, GATT and globalization mean
for the American people and for workers in the US and across
the globe? Are plant closings and free trade simply facts
of life in the new millennium, or are they being challenged?
