Course Meets: 11:15 - 12:20 MTW KH 200

Completion of the 2-year Biblical Hebrew sequence satisfies the COAS foreign language requirement.

This course will introduce you to the language, grammar, and vocabulary of the Hebrew Bible and Old
Testament. No prior knowledge of Hebrew is assumed! The course begins with the Hebrew alphabet and
systematically works through a standard textbook. The exercises in the textbook are based on selections
from the Hebrew Bible, so that very soon students will start to get comfortable with Biblical style and
vocabulary. Readings from the Bible itself will be introduced, as mastery is gradually gained. Introductory
Biblical Hebrew I comprises the first of a four-semester sequence that will fulfill the College of Arts and
Sciences foreign language requirement; and, it also can be counted toward the major in Near Eastern
Languages and Cultures and/or toward the certificate and major in the Jewish Studies Program. Under
certain circumstances six hours of Introductory Biblical Hebrew may also be counted toward a Religious
Studies major.
