In this course, you will learn some of the basic functions of Modern Turkish and will develop the skills
necessary to communicate in a variety of essential situations, such as greeting people, speaking about
yourself, asking questions, etc. In addition to reading short passages in Turkish, you will develop
writing skills based on the vocabulary and grammar introduced in communicative situations. Besides
using the printed course materials, you will be exposed to listening comprehension, speaking and
phonetic exercises. The course will focus on all of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. Learning the language will also give you the opportunity to discover the rich and varied
cultures of Turkey. You will receive written and oral homework assignments that will be collected by
the instructor. There will be a vocabulary quiz every week and a test on each unit.
Required texts: Ozel, Suzan. Turkish 1: A Communicative Approach and audio cassette tapes (will be
made available in the Language Lab).
