R338 Modern American Catholicism (Weaver) (3 Cr.) MW 2:30-3:45 BH 244

This course surveys the history of Catholicism in America. We begin with
some attention to the history of Catholicism in Europe, and will then
cover the various groups that came to this new world (Spaniards, English,
Irish, French, Germans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans). We will
concentrate on the main issues (immigration and assimilation in the 19th
century, arrival and internal church conflict in the 20th century) in the
last two centuries. Reading list will be available toward the end of this
semester. Grades will be based on mid-term and one research paper.
