Beginning with views of nature as expressed in a sample of American
Indian cultures, the course explores changing American attitudes and
perceptions of gendered "Nature" and technology. After looking first
at the colonial period, we then consider the nineteenth century - the
Romantic vision of nature, the founding of urban and national parks
and the rise of the "wilderness cult." We next turn to the twentieth
century and the advent of environmental activism. The course ends
with a brief consideration of the environmental crisis facing the
twenty first century. This section meets with SPEA V450.
