Development of the auditory system and landmarks of auditory
behavior, types of hearing loss, intake and exit interviewing
techniques, audiometric standards, pure tone audiometry, acoustic
impedance measurements, screening for auditory disorders and speech
audiometry. Effect of age and aging on oral communication,
counseling the hearing impaired, strategies in selecting hearing
aids, recommending auditory training, speech reading, and manual
communication. Textbook: Bess and Humes, "Audiology: The
Fundamentals", and chapters in Zemlin, 1988. Requirements: readings,
observations, audiograms, 3 tests and a final examination. Required
departmental course.
