S302 provides a review of acoustics in P105 appropriate for speech
and hearing applications. The material is then extended to the
acoustics of speech including the acoustic properties of vowels and
consonants.  Special topics on speech synthesis, speech perception
and development of first words are presented.  Readings: D.B.
Fry "The Physics of Speech" (1979); J. M. Pickett, The Acoustics of
Speech Communication: Fundamentals, Speech Perception Theory and
Technology, Allyn & Bacon, 1999; reading packet at Collegiate Copies
containing 8 items. Requirements: There are regular homework
assignments and three laboratories.  At regular intervals,
short quizzes are given. There are 3 tests in the course - 2 during
the semester and a cumulative final.  S302 is a required course for
SPHS majors.
