This course will cover the major social, political, economic, and
military-diplomatic developments in Europe from the turn of the
century until the eve of the second World War (1936). The central
focus of the course will be World War I, its origins, immediate
effects, and long-term consequences. Some of the specific topics that
will be dealt with include: the prewar social and political crisis
in Europe, the destruction of the traditional European order as a
result of World War I, the emergence of communism and fascism
following the War, and the Great Depression. Lectures and occasional
classroom discussion will be supplemented by weekly readings.
Formal requirements consist of two midterm examinations (one in-class
and one take-home) and a final.
