Course Format: Lecture: 9:05A-9:55A, MWF, JH A100, plus a problem-
solving section each week.
Prerequisites: Biol L211 or S211.
Course Description: An introduction to the ways that genetics is used
to solve biological problems. We will cover the basics -- how genes
are transmitted from parents to progeny -- for organisms of various
kinds. Then we will focus on what genes do (developmental genetics),
on how genetic tools are used to uncover pathways in development and
physiology, and on new horizons in human genetics and population
genetics.
Required Text: Griffiths, Gelbart, Miller and Lewontin, "Modern Genetic
Analysis".
Weekly Assignments: A problem set.
Exams/Papers: Four one-hour exams and a comprehensive final.
