The Rebel
Satisfies AHLA requirements.
Requires registration in ENGL W143.
Are you fed up with the system? Do you feel the urge to
resist authority? Are you ready to fight for a new society? If so,
you are not alone. The rebel has been a major figure in world
literature since its beginnings, and even gods and angels have
sometimes rebelled against the cosmic order. But what leads rebels to
oppose the established system of values that nurtured them? Are they
frustrated loners or prophetic visionaries? Can they ever fully
escape the system that they seek to overturn? Is there a conflict
between the rejection of old authority and the positive affirmation of
a new order? These are some of the questions this course will address
as it follows the character of the rebel around the world, from
ancient mythology to the modern world of individual despair and
political action.
