College Of Arts And Sciences | Voices from Africa
E104 | 0120 | Hanson, J.

Have you ever watched a film or read a novel about Africa and
wondered whether it told the "real story"? In this course we explore
films, novels and memoirs about the lives of individual Africans and
discuss how historians attempt to uncover the "real story" about the
African past.

Among the works analyzed are: the films Amistad and Roots, the novels
Things Fall Apart and Chaka, the memoirs of Olaudah Equiano and
several African oral traditions. The final course grade is determined
by the quality of work in a series of short papers and one exam.
