This course surveys the history of drama in the Western world from the
Classical period to
the present. It will consider how the genre of drama is shaped by
public performance.
Therefore, in addition to the readings, there will be required film
showings and required
theater performances. Students will write several papers and a
comprehensive final paper (in
lieu of a final exam). Students will also participate in a group
presentation about a play.
These presentations will include a performance of a brief excerpt from
the play. There will
be no exams.
